Animated Logo —

BUSTER KEATON

For this project, we were asked to design a logo for a legendary person. I chose Buster Keaton for my project, using his stunts and physical comedy as the primary source of inspiration. Keaton’s work within the silent comedy genre of the early 1900s–1920s relies heavily on movement, timing, and visual storytelling, as dialogue was absent. These qualities strongly influenced my design approach, as I wanted the logo to communicate character and narrative through form alone.

Using his iconic stunts and expressive body language as the foundation for the visual concept. I focused on translating his physical comedy into a typographic form that feels dynamic. The concept shows Keaton hanging onto the letter E as it pulls his body forward, a direct reference to one of his famous train stunts where movement and balance play a central role. His stretched posture and suspended body transform the typography into a moment of action, turning the logo itself into a visual gag that reflects his style of comedy. The exaggerated pose and sense of motion reflect Keaton’s signature deadpan humor and fearless physical performances. After sketching this idea, I was particularly excited by its potential and chose to develop it further into an animated logo.

Final Animation

After developing the initial sketch, I felt the concept successfully captured both Keaton’s persona and the spirit of early cinema. Therefore I expanded it into an animated logo. The animation focuses on movement and rhythm, allowing the logo to function like a short visual gag, referencing the structure and timing of silent film comedy.

The final animated logo is edited to resemble an old-school silent film. It is presented in black and white, and I added a reel like filter to evoke early 20th-century filmmaking. A looping film reel sound accompanies the animation, reinforcing the historical context and enhancing the overall atmosphere. Through this project, I aimed to explore how motion, typography, and historical reference can work together to create a logo that communicates both character and era.
